Mark Wunsch

Expedition Videographer -  Ph.D., Dipl. Biologist

Dr. Mark Wunsch is a media producer and communication consultant with a strong background in natural history and marine sciences. He believes in the power of audio-visual media for public awareness, the understanding of our environment and the promotion of solutions for more sustainability and conservation. His projects have led him to various places around the world.

Following his strong interest in developing strategies, tools and media for environmental education and awareness Mark has been working with NGOs like WWF, GOs and public television. Recently he spent 2.5 years with the Phuket Marine Biological Center and Aquarium in Thailand to develop a new exhibition and outreach concept and to build capacity in media creation. His latest productions include an innovative multi-media toolkit on sustainable marine tourism for WWF.

Mark holds a diploma in biology and communication. For his PhD he studied the hidden communities and ecology of caves and crevices in Red Sea coral reefs and discovered several new species. He advises research teams on scientific imaging and has a passion for engineering technical solutions for underwater camera systems. One of them has been acknowledged with an international patent.

Mark has been participating in a number of scientific expeditions to study coral reef ecology, oceanography and geochemistry. Finding Coral is his first submarine based expedition and he is excited to capture and communicate the results of the new discoveries.

Born and raised in Germany, Mark had been fascinated by BC’s tremendous natural beauty and native history since childhood. After working in science and communication projects in many countries, a dream has finally become true: he has been settling with his family recently on Quadra Island, BC. He enjoys the ocean from underwater or with his family in their new kayak.
